Gordon Jacob: Works for Oboe and Strings

The debut CD “G. Jacob: Works for Oboe and Strings” was issued in May, 2004 and features chamber music by the British composer Gordon Jacob, written for various combinations, including the “Six Shakespearian Sketches” for string trio, recorded here for the first time.

Musical Background

Gordon Jacob
… stands squarely in the tradition of English musical culture.
He studied at the Royal College of Music and later became a teacher there himself. All his compositions display his skilled craftsmanship, but he especially treasured his oboe quartet as one of his best chamber music works. It is remarkable for its almost symphonic density and its contrapunctal lines, even as it arises from basically cheerful musical ideas. In contrast, the Bagatelles and Sketches are suites of miniatures, tyical of Jacob’s chamber music style.
